A steady mare wins the first Preferred race

In the harness racing feature for fillies and mares at The Raceway at the Western Fair District on Wednesday, April 24, Laila Blue (Art Major) fought her way to her first career Preferred victory.

The mare, who has made 15 starts this year and hasn't missed a check, was sitting fifth when she slid out second-over for Travis Henry on the third turn. Laila Blue outkicked the three-wide Sports Duchess (Samuel Fillion) heading down the stretch, but she persisted while her cover, Exotic Dragon (Travis Cullen), cleared to the front. Laila Blue won by a length of 1:58. Exotic Dragon and Sports Duchess were dead-heated for first place.

Doug Good owns and trains Laila Blue, who is currently 15-for-136 lifetime with earnings of $190,994.  This season, she has made money in each of her 15 starts and has scored in 11 of them. Her 21st start at the Preferred level came on Wednesday.

Racing at the Raceway at the Western Fair District is scheduled to resume on Friday, April 26 at 5:50 p.m. EDT.
