Monday's 21st edition of the Grade 3 Winning Colours, the highlight event on the Memorial Day card at Churchill Downs, features a superb field of 11 fillies and mares, led by Juddmonte's ultra-consistent 4-year-old filly Dazzling Blue, a stakes winner and multiple graded stakes-placed speedster.
At 4:22 p.m. EDT, the Winning Colours field will go to post in race 8, which will be run at six furlongs.
Leading Churchill Downs spring meet trainer Brad Cox's Dazzling Blue made her seasonal debut a month ago when, in her first race in over six months, she lost by a short margin to Zeitlos in the Roxelana Stakes. Dazzling Blue placed third in the Raven Run (G2) at Keeneland behind Vahva and Alva Starr and second behind Maple Leaf Mel in the Victory Ride (G3) at Belmont when she was three years old. From outside post No. 11, jockey Florent Geroux, who has ridden Dazzling Blue in four of her seven-lifetime appearances, will get the call in the Winning Colours.
Three further mares and fillies that have won stakes are entered in the Winning Colors: B G Warrior, three-time Turfway Park stakes winner and Audubon Oaks victor Winner of the G3 Sugar Swirl and Positano Sunset was Spirit Wind.
Clearly Unhinged, a multiple Grade 1 winner, is one of the other fleet-footed fillies that entered the Winning Colours and is aiming for her first stakes score. Steve Asmussen's trained mare Clearly Unhinged made her comeback from a five-month freshening on April 30 when she easily won a second-level allowance race at Churchill Downs by two and a half lengths. The three-year-old daughter of Into Mischief placed third in the La Brea (G1) and second in the Test (G1) behind Daddysruby and Big Pond. From post three, jockey Joel Rosario will ride the horse in the Winning Colours.
