Dr. Ian Moore's Remarkable Journey Comes Full Circle in Prince Edward Island

Dr Ian Moore, a highly regarded horseman, was honoured with the prestigious O'Brien Award of Horsemanship for the second time, solidifying his position as a leading figure in the industry.

The recognition didn't stop there, as Moore also clinched the esteemed Canadian Trainer of the Year title at the 2023 O'Brien Awards held in his native P.E.I on Saturday, Feb. 3.

"It's just a wow moment for me. It's probably one of the best moments I've ever had in my life in harness racing."

remarked Moore afterwards.

This achievement holds special significance for Moore, as it brings his career full circle. The Ontario-based trainer accepted the O'Brien Award in the very place where his journey as a horseman began back in the late 1960s.

Expressing his gratitude, Moore acknowledged the incredible individuals who have been instrumental in his success. He particularly highlighted the enduring partnerships he has formed over the years, such as his longstanding collaboration with Ron McLellan and Gail, who have been by his side for an impressive four decades. Moore also emphasised the invaluable contributions of his talented drivers and exceptional grooms, whose dedication and expertise have played a crucial role in his achievements. Despite the prevailing labour shortage within the North American horse racing business, Moore's experience has been nothing short of fantastic, thanks to the unwavering support of the people around him.

In 2023, Moore reached a significant milestone by surpassing the $3 million mark in seasonal purse earnings for the first time in his illustrious career. Among the numerous highlights of his exceptional season, one standout achievement was his victory in the Canadian Pacing Derby with the accomplished older pacing stallion, Tattoo Artist. This outstanding horse, also an O'Brien Award divisional winner, concluded a million-dollar campaign and retired to stud with a career bankroll of $3.2 million. Additionally, Moore trained Stockade Seelster, another O'Brien Award divisional winner, who showcased remarkable talent in the Ontario Sires Stakes program and achieved commendable results in prestigious stakes events across the United States.

Moore's expertise also shone through in his training of Storm Shadow and Clever Cody, two-year-old pacing colt Sires Stakes champions in Ontario and Ohio, respectively. The 51 victories attained by Moore in 2023 mark the second-highest seasonal performance of his career, affirming his consistency and skill as a trainer.
