Fierceness Maintains Lead in NTRA Top Thoroughbred Poll

Thorpedo Anna is set to race on September 21, with the potential to rise in rankings if successful.

With a relatively calm weekend for top contenders and upsets in both of Woodbine's Grade 1 races for older horses, there was little movement in Week 34 of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association's (NTRA) Top Thoroughbred Poll. This poll highlights leading candidates for the prestigious Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year.

Repole Stable's Fierceness continues to solidify his hold on the number 1 position after his August 24 victory over Thorpedo Anna in the Travers Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course. In the first poll following that race, both horses were tied with 285 points, but Fierceness claimed the top spot with two additional first-place votes.

Fierceness, last year's Eclipse Award-winning 2-year-old male, has now extended his lead by 10 points, securing 17 first-place votes compared to Thorpedo Anna's eight. Thorpedo Anna is the only top 10 contender racing this weekend, as she prepares to compete in the $1 million Cotillion Stakes (G1) at Parx Racing on September 21.

Other adjustments in the rankings include a swap between Idiomatic and Dornoch, now ranked seventh and eighth, respectively. The Chosen Vron also reentered the top 10, sitting in 10th place after being bumped out the previous week. Next, who dropped from 10th to 11th, is set to run in the Greenwood Cup (G3) at Parx on Saturday.

Further down the list, Jonathan's Way, winner of the Iroquois Stakes (G3), became the first 2-year-old to make an appearance in this year's poll, earning four points to tie for 31st place.
