Eoin Harty, who last had a contender for the Kentucky Derby in 2018, now has two promising horses on the early Derby trail. According to Harty, First Resort's victory in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club and Poster’s win in the Remsen (G2) situate them as serious contenders. Harty remarked, however, that while both colts are undeniably talented, it remains early in their careers, emphasising the unpredictable nature of racing.
Harty, who has trained three Derby contenders in the past, reflected on his previous experiences, noting his highest finish was sixth with Colonel John in 2008. He mentioned a rare depth of talent among his current crop of about 45 horses, but he refrained from making any definitive plans regarding their next races, stating he would wait until late January or early February. He confirmed that First Resort would train at Turfway but remained open about potential race venues.
As for First Resort, he has demonstrated impressive ability throughout his races, and Harty attributed his success to a calm demeanour and a strong mind. Poster, on the other hand, while slightly less developed, is equally gentle and enjoys training. Other noteworthy horses in Harty’s barn include She’s All Charm and Golden Sunshine, both showing potential for future races. Harty's optimistic outlook continues as he navigates the upcoming racing season.
