Beloved maritime steed Kendal Python has sadly passed away at the grand age of 30. Yet, the legacy of Kendal Python extends beyond a seasoned racer with an illustrious career. It's a heartfelt tale of an inseparable bond between a horse and trainer, united at the perfect moment.
Over the course of an impressive 494 races, Kendal Python triumphed with a record of 60-55-57, accumulating over $62,000 in prize money. While this figure may appear modest, trainer Lilley reminisces about two pivotal instances where his treasured companion clinched vital victories for connections beyond his ownership circle.
In July 2003, under the guidance of New Zealand's Mark Jones, Kendal Python seized victory as the World Driving Championship descended upon Charlottetown Driving Park.
Fast forward four years and Kendal Python found himself entwined in the World Driving Championship once more, albeit indirectly.
The 2007 National Driving Championship held at Charlottetown Driving Park saw Kendal Python slated to race, only to be thrust into the limelight after a late withdrawal, paving the way for driver Gilles Barrieau to take the reins.
On the sombre day of Monday, Feb. 26, Kendal Python bid farewell, marking a bittersweet moment for Lilley. Later that evening, Lilley had the pleasure of witnessing a victory by his co-owned steed, All Bets On Tex, steered to triumph by trainer-driver Tyler Moore at The Raceway at the Western Fair District in a swift 1:54.4.
After an extensive career spanning nearly 500 races and 16 years of retirement, it is evident that Lilley provided Kendal Python with more than just contentment throughout their time together.
