As the days of the 2024 calendar dwindle, opportunities for sires to improve their standing on the North American general sires list become scarce. After a period of stagnation, recent weeks have seen notable movement among the top competitors. Nine of the ten sires within the top 25 managed to shift positions, with the notable exception being Munnings.
Having advanced three spots to rank No. 9, Munnings is on track to extend his streak of top-10 finishes based on progeny earnings to five consecutive years. Historically, his offspring earnings have consistently ranged between $13.2 million and $13.6 million annually since his top-10 tenure began in 2020, apart from a singular dip in 2020 to $9.34 million. This year, his progeny has also matched the average winning distance of 6.64 furlongs, coupled with an increase in the number of runners and winners compared to the previous year.
Munnings' recent rise in the rankings can be attributed to two significant wins over the past weekends, both featuring $250,000 purses. Notably, a 2-year-old colt named Poster captured the Remsen Stakes (G2), marking his third consecutive victory. Additionally, Howard Wolowitz, a 3-year-old colt and top earner for Munnings this year, rebounded from a previous setback to secure victory in the Holiday Cheer Stakes at Turfway Park. Munnings, who began his stud career in 2011, now prepares for a 2025 standing fee of $65,000 at Ashford Stud in Versailles, Kentucky.
