Subsanador, the Group 1 winner in Argentina and the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap runner-up by a head in his second appearance in the United States on March 3, was sold privately and transferred from trainer John Sadler to Richard Mandella. On Monday, the two trainers verified the change.
Five-year-old Subsanador, bred in Argentina and sired by Fortify, was acquired by Wathnan Racing. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, runs Wathnan Racing as his stable. Following protracted talks with the former proprietor, Stud Facundito, Subsanador relocated from Sadler to Mandella last week.
In his U.S. debut, Subsanador finished fourth as the favorite in the Grade 2 San Antonio Stakes held at Santa Anita on December 26. He is a seven-time winner from 14 starts, including three Group 1 victories in Argentina. He made a big improvement in his second American start. In the Big 'Cap, Subsanador started the pace before being worn down by Newgate.
Subsanador has been nominated for the Grade 2 Californian Stakes at Santa Anita on April 20, but he will not be competing. Mandella declared, "I'm going to wait for the Gold Cup," alluding to the Grade 2, $200,000 Hollywood Gold Cup, which is scheduled on May 27 over a distance of 1 1/4 miles.
