Trainer Kevin Hildebrandt and driver Nathan Sobey - formidable duo

Trainer Kevin Hildebrandt and driver Nathan Sobey made a formidable duo on the opening day of The Track On 2 meet, dominating the harness racing action on Sunday, June 23.

Hildebrandt kicked off his training triple on the eight-race card with Sams Jizzy Jet in the opener. The sophomore gelding, sired by Toucam Sam and co-owned by Katie MacLennan, scored his maiden victory in style. Coming from off-the-pace, Sams's Jizzy Jet triumphed in 1:58.4, edging out Happy Little Lill, Lifesabouttogetgood, and favourite Downwiththesandman by half a length. The upset win at odds of 17-1 returned $37.70 for a $2 win ticket.

Hildebrandt's next starter was his homebred four-year-old mare, AK Black Badger ($6.60), who equalled her lifetime mark of 1:57.3 in the third race. Under Nathan Sobey's guidance, AK Black Badger secured victory by a quarter-length over Alpine Billy, with favoured Vanyla Beanz settling for third place.

In race five, Hildebrandt's lease Ima Moma Boy ($15.90), a seven-year-old gelding by Vertical Horizon, delivered another winning performance. Sobey orchestrated a smart race strategy as Ima Moma Boy overtook popular pacesetter Promising Flight, crossing the finish line in 1:56.3.

Nathan Sobey had a stellar day in the driver's seat, capturing four victories in the first five races. His streak was only interrupted in the featured conditioned pace, where defending champion Dave Kelly guided Lunch Pail Guy ($4) to victory. Lunch Pail Guy, owned by Kelly, Paul MacDonald, and Randy Smith, rallied three-wide off the cover to win in a career-best time of 1:56.1, holding off Avas Baby Angel and Outlawstaythecourse.

Live harness racing continues at the Track On 2 with the next race day scheduled for Saturday, June 29, with post time at 4:15 p.m. Racing will subsequently take place every Sunday until the meet finale on September 15, with additional Friday and Saturday cards scheduled for the first two weeks in September. Post time for all cards will be 1:10 p.m., except for the two Fridays in September, when racing starts at 4:15 p.m.
