Krista Cole Fulfills Her Dream of Winning the King’s Plate

A Lifelong Dream Takes Shape

For Krista Cole, the idea of participating in Canada’s legendary horse race, the King’s Plate, has been a lifelong aspiration. This prestigious event, steeped in history dating back to 1860, has always held a special place in Cole’s heart.

Throughout her life, whether as a fan, groom, exercise rider, or now as a trainer, Cole, hailing from Prince Edward Island, frequently wondered what it would feel like to see her own horse enter the Plate’s starting gate, surrounded by thousands of eager spectators.

In just over a week, Cole will finally experience that moment when Thor’s Cause, a bay gelding sired by Brody’s Cause, takes his place in the $1 million classic.

Cole reflected on the years leading up to this milestone, noting that the journey, with all its ups and downs, has made the achievement even more meaningful. She has long imagined what it would be like to have a horse in the Plate, and now that dream is within reach.

Cole’s path to this pinnacle moment in her career began in the close-knit community of Mayfield, where her ties to Standardbred racing were deeply rooted. A road named "Toronto," marked only by an arrow, seemed to beckon her toward a future out west.

Her early connection with horses started with pacers and trotters and later expanded to show jumping. Whether on a racetrack, in an arena, or along a dusty trail, Cole always felt a deep sense of contentment with horses.

Aside from her passion for horses, Cole was committed to her education. In 2000, she earned a science degree from Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia. However, it was clear to her that true happiness would be found on the racetrack.

Cole’s determination eventually led her to Ottawa in 2021. There, a friend’s casual suggestion to visit Woodbine sparked a new chapter in Cole’s life. She had seen Woodbine races on TV, but her first in-person experience at the track left a lasting impression.

Cole’s scientific background, rooted in curiosity and research, might have played a role in her fascination with the Toronto oval. From the moment she stepped into Woodbine, she knew she had found her place. The abundance of horses and the thrill of riding them fueled her desire to be more than just a groom—she wanted to own and race them.

She had watched the King’s Plate on TV growing up, but it wasn’t until 2002 that she witnessed the race in person, standing among the crowd as T J’s Lucky Moon pulled off an 82-1 upset victory. For someone from Prince Edward Island, the experience was overwhelming, opening her eyes to a world much grander than she had ever known.

As her skills and knowledge of the industry grew, so did her ambition. In 2003, Cole obtained her Quarter Horse jockey license and won her first race. After her daughter Kalista was born five years later, Cole shifted her focus from riding to working at various stables on the Woodbine backstretch, each experience contributing to her development as a trainer.

A Journey Through Horse Racing

Cole’s journey continued to unfold, with valuable learning experiences and relationships that shaped her career. She was influenced by many horsemen and women, including Laurie Silvera, who played a significant role in inspiring her to become a trainer.

In 2012, Cole took out her trainer’s licenсe, and in 2013, she celebrated her first win with a horse named Remember to Dream—a horse that carried more than just an inspiring name. Cole had purchased him at a sale, despite having no prior experience in such transactions, and nurtured him from a yearling into a racehorse.

One of Cole’s greatest success stories is Candy Overload, a top sprinter she co-owned and developed. Although the horse was eventually sold, the excitement and achievements shared with him only deepened her love for the sport.

Despite parting ways with Candy Overload, Cole’s career continued to ascend. Last year, she achieved personal bests in wins, top-three finishes, and purse earnings. The support from partners like Sherry McLean, Denny Andrews, and Ryan Brewster has been instrumental in her success.

The Road to the King’s Plate

As the King’s Plate approaches, the excitement in Cole’s Barn 32 is palpable. Thor’s Cause may be small, but Cole is confident in his big heart and determination to give his best. The owners are equally enthusiastic, adding to the anticipation of race day.

Cole’s emotions run high when her horses race, and Plate Day will be no exception. Surrounded by her daughters, family, and friends, she will proudly cheer for Thor’s Cause, regardless of the outcome.

Reflecting on her journey, Cole mused about the symbolic significance of the "Toronto road" that once pointed her toward this dream. From the paved streets of Prince Edward Island to the dirt paths of Woodbine’s backstretch, Cole’s story is one of determination and passion. Now, with her dream of having a horse in the King’s Plate finally realized, she is exactly where she wants to be.

The dream of racing in the Plate is one that many share, but few achieve. For Krista Cole, that dream is no longer a distant hope but a thrilling reality.
