Pitching Fast’s Homecoming

For many years, Hannah Reynolds would often find herself gazing out the window of her family's Kentucky farm, imagining a robust chestnut gelding fitting perfectly into the lush green pastures.

The Reynolds family, deeply rooted in the Bluegrass State, had a unique connection to Pitching Fast, a striking son of the stallion Munnings. His racing career began at Turfway Park on December 4, 2019, an event that held special significance for the family.

Name Origin

Hannah's fondness for Pitching Fast, named in honour of the legendary baseball player Walter Johnston, was established well before his debut on the racetrack over four years ago. She shared that her father, Kevin Reynolds, who bred the horse along with Kellie and Tim Holland, always held a special affection for him, a sentiment Hannah echoed.

Pitching Fast entered the Keeneland September Yearling Sale in 2018 as Hip No. 2467 and was sold for $40,000 to Up Hill Stables. His racing career was brief, starting with two races at Turfway Park, where he finished fifth and seventh. He then moved to Woodbine under trainer Rachel Halden, where he raced four times, winning his last two starts. On October 31, he impressively won a seven-furlong race with Justin Stein as his jockey.

Unexpected Career End

Despite his promising performance, Pitching Fast's career was cut short due to tendonitis, leading to his retirement. He was then taken in by LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement, a reputable organisation dedicated to the care and adoption of retired racehorses. Hannah and her father quickly reached out to LongRun upon learning of Pitching Fast's retirement, eager to welcome him back into their lives.

Lauren Millet, LongRun’s farm manager, fondly remembered Pitching Fast, whom they called "Walter." He was known for his friendly and gentle nature. When Hannah expressed her desire to adopt him, the LongRun team was pleased, especially since the horse was returning to the family that had bred him.

The day Pitching Fast arrived at Hannah's farm was filled with excitement and anticipation. She recalled the surreal experience of seeing the majestic horse step off the trailer. Her father, equally thrilled, lovingly nicknamed the horse "The Red Rocker" and enjoyed spending time with him.

Hannah’s husband, Jeremy Maynard, also developed a bond with Pitching Fast, often bringing him treats and enjoying his company. Pitching Fast, affectionately called "Red," soon began a new chapter in his life as a show horse. Hannah introduced him to dressage, where he showed remarkable aptitude, scoring well in his first competition.

Hannah envisions a bright future for Red in the show ring, eager to see him develop further in different disciplines like Hunters, Jumpers, and Dressage. Sharing Red's talents and affectionate nature with others, she allows friends to ride him, enhancing the joy and fulfilment he brings.

Reflecting on the journey, Hannah expressed profound gratitude to LongRun for facilitating the reunion. The organisation’s thorough process ensured that Red was returning to a loving and capable home. Lauren Millet echoed these sentiments, pleased with the positive outcome for all involved.

Hannah treasures the sight of Red grazing peacefully in the fields, a constant reminder of the bond they share and the joy of having him home. The story of Pitching Fast is a testament to the enduring connections between horses and the people who care for them, a story of love, dedication, and a cherished homecoming.
