Tony Beltrami steered Dark Pool to a triumphant victory in the $12,162 American Harness Drivers Club (AHDC) Trot at Freehold Raceway on Saturday afternoon.
Commencing from the innermost post position, Beltrami deftly manoeuvred Dark Pool into a prime position just behind the 6-5 favourite, Lionhead, driven by Yogi Sheridan, as they passed the opening quarter in 30.1 seconds. The pressure intensified as Hammer Creek, the second favourite under John Calabrese, made a move around the turn, challenging Lionhead as they reached the half-mile mark in 1:00.3.
Despite the valiant effort of Hammer Creek, Lionhead managed to maintain the lead heading into the backstretch, clocking 1:30.3 at three-quarters, with Dark Pool looming ever closer. As they straightened out for the final stretch, Dark Pool accelerated along the inside rail, overtaking Lionhead to secure a thrilling victory by a mere half-length in 2:01.1, defying the odds at 10-1.
In a commendable performance, Train, guided by Paul Minore, secured the third position after a solid pylon trip, while Allindotime, steered by Bruce Baker, finished in fourth place.
Dark Pool, an 11-year-old gelding sired by Cantab Hall, is trained and co-owned by Paul Fusco and Tony Beltrami. The victory paid out at $22.20, marking a successful outing for the talented duo.
