BSA Alumni Shine as Fatal Flaw Takes Cape Fillies Guineas

At Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on December 7, Bloodstock South Africa (BSA) graduates dominated the feature races, led by Fatal Flaw's commanding victory in the Grade 1 Cape Fillies Guineas.

Trained by Brett and James Crawford, Fatal Flaw overcame a challenging draw to secure her third career win. Guided expertly by Piere Strydom, the filly surged to the front and held her lead to finish two lengths clear, earning her first Grade 1 title. This victory follows her triumph in the Grade 3 HSH Princess Charlene Starling Stakes, bringing her earnings to R1,329,938. Bred by Laurence Wernars and purchased for R210,000 at the 2023 National Yearling Sale, Fatal Flaw is by New Predator, whose short-lived legacy includes dual Grade 1 winner Purple Pitcher.

In other highlights, Oriental Charm, last season’s Durban July champion, made an impactful return in the Grade 2 Green Point Stakes. The Brett and James Crawford-trained colt, bred by Cheveley Stud and ridden by JP Van Der Merwe, led throughout to claim his third consecutive victory. With five wins from 11 starts and earnings of R3,840,624, the R375,000 National Yearling Sale purchase is a strong contender for upcoming Grade 1 events.

Adding to the day’s success, Holding Thumbs, trained by Glen Kotzen, claimed the Listed Cape Summer Stayers Handicap. Ridden by Sean Veale, the R1.1 million purchase battled strongly to secure his first major win, raising his career earnings to R425,188.

The standout performances highlight the continued prominence of Bloodstock South Africa alumni in feature racing.
