Century Downs, highlights of the 11-race card

Century Downs hosted an 11-race card on Saturday, August 3, highlighted by the Alberta Sired Stakes (ABSS) for two-year-olds.

In the first division of the ABSS Starlet, a field of six fillies competed. Ima Shipwreck (driven by Brandon Campbell) took the early lead, with Hot Shot Shark (Logan Gillis) settling into a pocket position and Custard Dolce (Custard The Dragon) in third. Ima Shipwreck set the early fractions of 28.3, 58.2, and 1:28.1. In the deep stretch, Custard Dolce made a strong move three-wide and overtook the leader with a final quarter in 27.4, winning in 1:56.2. Hot Shot Shark finished second, and Ima Shipwreck held third.

Custard Dolce, trained and driven by Jamie Gray, secured her second consecutive win after a fourth-place finish in her debut. 

The second division also featured six fillies. Phone The Cops (Serge Masse) grabbed the lead early, with Captains Hideaway (Nathan Sobey) in the pocket and co-favorite Ahoof Ahead in third. After an opening quarter of 29 seconds, Ahoof Ahead moved up to challenge at the half, but Phone The Cops maintained the lead through fractions of 59.3 and 1:20.3. However, Blowing In The Wind (Winds Of Change) surged past near the wire, winning in 1:57.2. Phone The Cops finished second, Ahoof Ahead was third, and Captains Hideaway and Tornado Rain dead-heated for fourth.

Winds Of Change, trained by Harlond Hanning and driven by Brandon Campbell, earned her first career victory after two prior second-place finishes.

The third division had seven fillies. Mademechangemymind (Winds Of Change) used her rail position to her advantage, setting fractions of 29.2, 59.4, and 1:29.3. She won wire-to-wire with a final quarter of 28.2, stopping the clock at 1:58. Eyes Up Here finished second, and Utherockinmyroll was third.

Mademechangemymind, trained, owned, and driven by Nathan Sobey, achieved her first career win after a previous non-finish.

In the ABSS Rising Star for colts and geldings, the 16 entrants were divided into two splits. In the first division, Momas Work Of Art (Outrageous Art) led from the start, pacing an opening quarter of 28 seconds and middle fractions of 59.2 and 1:28.4. He closed with a final quarter of 29.1, winning in 1:58. Crime Junkie finished second, and Rocky Mtn Wine took third.

Momas Work Of Art, driven by Serge Masse and trained by Shelly Arsenault, earned his first career win.

The second division saw Ima Rum Runner (Captain Deo) as the heavy favourite. He took the lead early and set fractions of 28.2, 58.1, and 1:27.4. Despite an untouched trip, he finished strongly with a final quarter of 29.2, winning in 1:57.1. Discontinued (Brandon Campbell) charged late to secure second, while Disco Dancer held third.

Ima Rum Runner, trained and driven by Nathan Sobey, scored his second career win and his third straight top-three finish, with a previous lifetime mark of 1:56.3.

Additionally, the elimination for the Ralph Klein Memorial was held, with the top four from each division and the fastest fifth-place finisher advancing to next week’s final.
