Clockers returned to action at Hastings Racecourse in Vancouver over the weekend as Horseracing BC scouts horses to monitor.
Trainers were approached this week, with requests to nominate a horse they anticipate seeing in action this year. Some names shared are familiar to Hastings regulars, while others are lesser-known prospects worth noting. Here are three early contenders, with more to follow in the lead-up to the upcoming season.
1.Viva La Diva, a 3-year-old filly by Sungold – Vinotera (Finality)
Trainer: Barbara Heads
The anticipation is palpable in the Heads’ stable as Viva La Diva prepares to make her return to the racetrack. This daughter of Sungold, a full sibling to former Century Casino Oaks victor Sangria and last season's dual Allowance winner Viva La Vino, debuted in the Sadie Diamond Futurity Stakes, securing third place behind Lizzie’s Rayne and Eddie’s Girl. Following this, the Bennetts’ homebred filly broke her maiden on her second attempt, before placing third in the Glen Todd Fantasy Stakes, behind Broke Magic and Lizzie’s Rayne.
Barbara Heads commented,
“We're all eagerly anticipating Viva La Diva's return. She has shown physical improvement over the winter following a promising 2-year-old season.”
2. Peter Flies, a 4-year-old gelding by Private Gold — Irene Flies (Rocky Bar)
Trainer: Peter Milburn
Acquired from Golden Gate in February, Peter Flies’ connections are eagerly awaiting his debut at Hastings. Unraced as a juvenile, this Washington-bred son of Private Gold (Seeking the Gold) has competed in seven races, clinching two victories, the most recent being a dominant win in a $12,500 claimer last month.
Peter Milburn expressed,
“We've nicknamed him Peter Pan and we're looking forward to his debut at Hastings.”
3. Daz Lin Force, a 3-year-old filly by Counterforce — Daz Lin Dawn (Popular)
Trainer: Keith Pedersen
Being the first offspring of former BC Horse of the Year Daz Lin Dawn, Daz Lin Force holds promise under trainer Keith Pedersen’s guidance. Despite facing tough competition in her juvenile races last season, including a noteworthy duel with Lizzie’s Rayne, this daughter of prominent BC sire Counterforce showed potential.
Keith Pedersen remarked,
“With Daz Lin Dawn’s lineage, she holds a special place, and we are eager to witness her progression this year after a solid showing last season.”
