The Equine Disease Communication Centre (EDCC) has recently disclosed the confirmation of an equine strangles case affecting two Standardbreds based in Ontario.
Situated at a private estate in Wellington County, two broodmares exhibited symptoms of Strangles, such as fever, nasal discharge, and swollen lymph nodes, on the 23rd of February following interaction with horses from different estates.
Subsequent testing on the 27th of February revealed a positive identification of S. equi through bacterial culture. The owner is currently collaborating with their veterinarian to manage and contain the outbreak.
