In a recent report on the G1 Japan Cup, three elite European contenders ventured to Japan, determined to challenge the dominance of local horses in the 2400-metre event. However, the race tempo significantly affected their performance. Do Deuce, a five-year-old horse by Heart's Cry, surged from the rear of the pack as they approached the finish line, ultimately claiming victory over Shin Emperor and Durezza, who finished in a tie for second. Goliath, the European representative, managed to secure a sixth-place finish but faced difficulties navigating from his inside barrier.
The race favoured Do Deuce, the favourite following a commanding win in the G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn). Beginning cautiously, he eventually advanced in the final stretch, clocking the fastest final 600 metres of the race. Goliath, despite being well-positioned earlier, struggled to find his stride as the race progressed.
Jockey Yutaka Take expressed satisfaction with Do Deuce’s execution, noting the slow pace required careful handling. After gaining traction nearing the last corner, Do Deuce showcased remarkable speed, securing his fifth elite victory. Following the race, Goliath's connections acknowledged the slower pace, attributing it to their performance.
With a total turnover of $225.3 million for the day, this year's Japan Cup witnessed a stellar return for local talents, while European challengers returned home empty-handed. Do Deuce may now focus on defending his title in the upcoming Arima Kinen.
