Due to Hurricane, Tampa Bay Downs Delays Opening

Tampa Bay Downs has postponed the opening of its backstretch to Monday, Nov. 4, due to flooding in the stable area and damage to multiple barn roofs caused by recent hurricanes. However, the track is still on track to kick off its 2024-25 season on Wednesday, Nov. 20, according to general manager Peter Berube.

“Our track maintenance team, led by vice president of facilities and track surfaces Tom McLaughlin, is working tirelessly to address the necessary repairs,” Berube stated. “We recognize that this situation poses challenges for some horsemen, but our top priority is ensuring a safe and suitable environment for both them and their horses as they prepare for competition.”

Training on the track is scheduled to commence on Wednesday, Nov. 6.

Tampa Bay Downs, like much of Florida’s west coast, has faced significant damage from the dual impact of hurricanes Helene on Sept. 26 and Milton this past Wednesday. The repercussions of these storms are expected to linger for months.

“As eager as we are to welcome a new season, our thoughts remain with our horsemen, employees, and fans who have played a crucial role in our success and who have been affected by the hurricanes,” Berube added. “We deeply hope that the return of Thoroughbred racing can help restore a sense of normality and offer a much-needed source of enjoyment for everyone involved, just as it has in the past.”
