The three-year-old colt and gelding pacers in the Ohio Sires Stakes saw a clean sweep for Rose Run Zane and Clever Cody. At MGM Northfield Park on Saturday night, June 1, every horse won handily.
In the first of two categories, sophomore colt pacers are valued at $89,041. With a :27.1 first quarter, Rose Run Zane with Austin Hanners up defeated Janelle Granny and Aaron Merriman.
After a :56.3 half, Trevor Smith's Heavyweightway pushed the leads as they approached the backstretch, passing the three-quarter mark in 1:24.3.
Rose Run Zane extended his advantage at the last circle and won in 1:52.4, defeating Janelle Granny by a half-length. In third place was Hundred Dollar Man.
Rose Run Zane is trained by Dan Venier for John and Leann Saunders. The Racing Hill offspring increased his earnings for 2024 to $177,286 after winning six of his nine outings this year.
Merriman led Clever Cody from the rail to the lead in the second division and never looked back. With a first-quarter time of :27.4, clever Cody set the pace, finishing the half in 56.2.
Clever Cody widened his lead against Rock The Hill with Billy Davis Jr. heading up the backstretch, winning three quarters in 1:24. The son of The Panderosa broke away on the last bend and won by two lengths in 1:52.
For Clever Cody, who has made $89,042 so far this year, it was his second victory in three starts. Dr Ian Moore is the trainer and owner of Clever Cody, which is owned by The Clever Cody Stable.
Outer Banks came in third, and Rock The Hill came in second place.
The second leg of the Sires Stakes for three-year-old colt trotters will take place at MGM Northfield Park on Friday, June 8.
