Fifth Jockey Title at Del Mar

As the summer meet at Del Mar approaches, jockey Juan Hernandez is eager to stake his claim for a fifth riding title. Despite strong competition, particularly from rival Flavien Prat in past seasons, Hernandez is ready to showcase his skills on the track.

Having secured both the summer and fall titles last year and the summer title in 2022, Hernandez is determined to continue his success. With Prat currently focused on Saratoga, Hernandez finds himself as a leading contender for this season. The absence of Prat opens the door for other competitors, including Umberto Rispoli, Antonio Fresu, Hector Berrios, Kyle Frey—the recent Los Alamitos meet champion—and veterans like Mike Smith and Edwin Maldonado.

Hernandez embraces the challenge posed by his peers. "I like the competition. I’ve always thought competition makes you better," he remarked. With two or three new riders joining the mix, Hernandez remains focused and excited about the upcoming meet. His training routine combines hard work in the mornings and afternoons, a commitment that reflects his ambitions.

Riding with the best is essential, and Hernandez's connection with his agent Craig O’Bryan has proven invaluable. "He’s helped me a lot from day one," Hernandez says of O’Bryan, who plays a crucial role in selecting horses and strategising post-race. Their effective partnership has contributed significantly to Hernandez’s competitive edge, with a seamless collaboration allowing for thorough discussions about each horse he rides.

Hernandez's dedication to his craft is recognized by top trainers like Bob Baffert. The seasoned trainer praises Hernandez for his calm demeanour and appreciation for his position in the sport. Hernandez’s stellar performance last summer, including 39 wins—eight in stakes races—has opened doors beyond California, leading to opportunities at prestigious tracks.

Reflecting on his travels, Hernandez enthused, "Travelling is nice, but it’s nicer when you win." His victories at Oaklawn earlier this year, including the Arkansas Derby and the Apple Blossom, have helped him gain recognition among the sport's elite.

Despite his expanding horizons, Del Mar remains Hernandez's home. "I love Del Mar, this is a really nice place," he affirms, citing the quality of racing, food, and weather as key attractions. As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on Hernandez as he competes for another title with the drive and determination that have defined his career thus far.
