Filion Steps Away Leaving His Future Open

Sylvain Filion, one of harness racing's top drivers, has stepped away from the sport, but it’s unclear if this is a permanent decision. On October 12 at Woodbine Mohawk Park, Filion won two 2024 Ontario Sires Stakes Super Finals, driving You Got It Kemp and Odds On Platinum. His victory with Odds On Platinum marked his 19th Super Final title, setting a new record for most wins in the series.

Filion, 55, shared in a post-race interview that he plans to take a break, effective immediately. His decision allows him to focus on his family, having recently moved back to Quebec where his daughter will attend school. Filion and his family had been planning this transition for about a year.

A Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Famer, Filion has won 10,230 races and earned over $144 million in career purses. However, when asked if this break means retirement, Filion remained undecided. "For now, I'm just taking the winter off and leaving the door open for a return in the spring," he said.

While Filion’s absence creates opportunities for younger drivers to gain experience, his potential return raises questions. He admitted that if he comes back, balancing his career with family would be a tough decision.

Filion's departure marks the end of an era, at least for now, while he reflects on his next steps.
