The harness racing card at MGM Northfield Park on Saturday, August 31, was filled with surprises, including several longshot wins and Taylor McKean's first career training victory.
McKean, a 20-year-old Pennsylvania horsewoman, earned her first win as a trainer in the ninth race, with Coffee House, a 12-year-old pacing mare driven by Braiden Rhoades. At odds of 95-1, Coffee House was the longest-priced winner of the night. Sitting just off the pace early on, Coffee House made a powerful three-wide move off the final turn and surged past Sudden Change N in the final strides to win by three-quarters of a length in 1:56.4. A $2 win bet on Coffee House paid an impressive $194.60.
This victory marked McKean’s first training win in her 54th start.
With the Pick-5 going uncovered for the second consecutive night, Sunday, September 1, offers a significant wagering opportunity. The Pick-5, starting in race six, features a carryover of $11,950 with a low 14 percent takeout. Additionally, the 50-cent Pick-6, beginning in race eight, also went uncovered on Saturday and will have a carryover of $6,844.
