Givens sees the future in Lazarus

Wayne Givens, a seasoned horseman from Delaware, showcased his enduring prowess in the harness racing world by training two upset winners at Freehold Raceway on September 21. The 74-year-old, who has trained over 2,100 winners throughout his 35-year career, highlighted the potential of progeny from the dual-hemisphere stallion Lazarus N—specifically with Mr Three O Five and BC’s Capela.

Mr Three O Five, a well-bred colt previously trained by Nancy Takter, was racing for Givens for the first time after Givens acquired him. This colt, purchased for $100,000, boasts a lineage that connects him to esteemed bloodlines, including a great-great-grandson of the legendary Rodine Hanover. Givens, who owns a share in Lazarus, expressed his admiration for the stallion's offspring, noting their excellent temperament and racing capabilities. Mr Three O Five managed to secure a victory in the $30,000 Homegrown 3YO Pace, triumphing convincingly and clocking in at 1:54.3.

Meanwhile, BC’s Capela delivered a remarkable performance in the $60,000 Renaissance Final for two-year-old pacers, where he upset the odds with a staggering payout of $171.40. Givens, who raised Capela himself, recounted the horse's impressive track record and well-mannered nature. Under the drive of Troy Beyer, Capela fought valiantly throughout the race, ultimately cutting nearly two seconds off his lifetime best.

Givens's strategic eye for talent and his experience in the field resonated in these victories, emphasising a commitment to nurturing the horses in his care. Although he operates a smaller stable nowadays, the success of these Lazarus progeny may encourage him to travel more for racing opportunities. The triumphs at Freehold were significant for Givens, affirming that his passion and competitiveness in the harness racing industry remain as vibrant as ever.
