Guido Di took charge of his luck on Thursday, July 18, at Hollywood Casino at The Meadows, dominating the $21,200 Open Handicap Trot after a string of close calls in recent races.
Under the guidance of driver Brady Brown, Guido Di surged to the lead from post three. The five-year-old Wishing Stone-Focus On Me gelding comfortably repelled challenges from Commander Frank, who made a first-over bid, and Tequila Talkin, the 7-5 favourite who attempted a late charge from the Lightning Lane. Guido Di crossed the finish line in a career-best time of 1:52, securing victory by 1-3/4 lengths over Tequila Talkin, with Good Feeln To Know finishing third.
Trained by Steve Schoeffel, Guido Di now boasts career earnings of $335,042, owned by Kathy Schoeffel, Lewis Falton, and Marian Schilling. His mile time was just two-fifths of a second off the track record for older trotting geldings.
Aaron Merriman steered four winners, while Ronnie Wrenn, Jr. notched three victories during the 15-race card.
Live racing at The Meadows will be suspended on Friday for an on-track event. However, action returns on Saturday, July 20, with the spotlight on the eliminations for the $400,000 Delvin Miller Adios Pace for the Orchids. The card also features stakes for freshman colt and gelding pacers, including a $192,108 Pennsylvania Sires Stake and divisions of the PA Stallion Series totalling $120,000. Bettors will find a $2,048.52 carryover in the Pick 5 (race 11) to spice up the day's wagering. Post time is scheduled for 12:45 p.m.
