Hades Emerges Victorious at Gulfstream Park as Fierceness Falters in Three-Year-Old Season Opener

Fierceness, belonging to Repole Stable, was the imposing favorite to win the prestigious $250,000 Holy Bull (G3) at Gulfstream Park. However, Hades, owned by D J Stable LLC and Robert Cotran, showed remarkable courage in facing the reigning Eclipse Award-winning juvenile of 2023.

With an unblemished record in its previous two starts, Hades wasted no time in asserting dominance over the champion and six other competitors in the 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-olds. Breaking alertly, Hades surged to the front and never relinquished the lead, delivering a stunning upset victory with odds of 9-1. The 35th running of the Holy Bull, a significant stepping stone towards the Curlin Florida Derby (G1) on March 30, headlined an action-packed 12-race program that featured a total of five stakes races for 3-year-olds, including four graded stakes. Trainer Joe Orseno's Hades bravely withstood early pressure from Inveigled and a late challenge from

Fierceness, showcasing tremendous reserves of stamina and determination down the stretch. The 1-5 favorite faded to third place, while the late-closing Domestic Product secured the runner-up position, trailing the victorious Hades by two lengths.

Orseno expressed his delight in the race outcome, praising Hades' acceleration and ability to distance himself from such a formidable opponent. He acknowledged the challenging start Fierceness had to overcome, emphasizing the importance of a strong beginning to establish a favorable position in the race.

While disappointed with Fierceness's performance, trainer Todd Pletcher highlighted the difficulties faced due to the rough start and expressed confidence in the horse's potential.

Hades completed the 1 1/16-mile distance in a commendable time of 1:46.07, displaying remarkable resilience under constant pressure. With its victory over the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) winner, Hades proved its mettle and cemented its status as a formidable contender in the field.

Jockey Paco Lopez, who rode Hades to victory, commended the horse's fighting spirit and his ability to overcome challenges. Lopez had also partnered with Hades in his first two victories, establishing a strong rapport with the talented son of Awesome Slew. Hades' journey to success has not been without obstacles, as evidenced by his overcoming a rough start in his debut at Gulfstream Park on December 9. Despite the initial setback, Hades showcased his resilience by making a remarkable comeback and winning a 5 ½-furlong maiden special weight race.

In its subsequent race, Hades enjoyed a much smoother run, triumphing in a seven-furlong optional claiming allowance for Florida-breds with a commanding eight-length lead. Trainer Orseno expressed his belief that Hades has not yet reached its full potential, hinting at future plans without committing to the March 2 Fountain of Youth (G2), the final prep race for the Florida Derby. Orseno emphasized that the horse's condition and readiness will guide their decision.

Reflecting on the victory, Orseno expressed his satisfaction in bringing together long-time clients Leonard Green's D J Stable LLC and Robert Cotran, who purchased Hades for $130,000 at the 2022 OBS April sale. The accomplishment served as a testament to the enduring relationships forged in the world of horse racing.
