Heinz Steinmann Celebrated Breeder Passes Away at 92

Heinz Steinmann, a prominent figure in the California thoroughbred racing community and the breeder of the revered stallion Swiss Yodeler, has passed away at the age of 92 on October 7. His remarkable contributions to the industry were recognized when he was named the California Breeder of the Year by the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association in 2017.

Originally from Switzerland, Steinmann immigrated to the United States with his family at 16, managing the Wrightwood ski area, later known as Mountain High. After selling the ski resort in 1983, he pursued his true passion for thoroughbred racing. Swiss Yodeler, a talented horse acquired for $60,000 at the 1996 Keeneland September Yearling Sale by trainer Mike Harrington, became a Grade I winner with earnings exceeding $761,000. However, his true legacy was as a sire, leading California sires in 2006, thanks to his Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) champion son, Thor’s Echo. Over his breeding career, Swiss Yodeler sired 15 black-type winners, culminating in total progeny earnings surpassing $31 million.

Steinmann also found success with Creative Cause, a Grade I-winner and Kentucky Derby contender whose offspring includes the $2 million-earner Pavel. He leaves behind his beloved wife Lora, 11 children, 46 grandchildren, and 36 great-grandchildren, cherished memories of a life dedicated to both family and thoroughbred racing.
