Jimmy Freight, who set a lifetime mark of 1:48, will stand stud

The O’Brien Award-winning harness racing pacer and former Ontario stallion Jimmy Freight (Sportswriter) is set to begin a new chapter in Alberta. He recently arrived at Faith Valley Ranch, where he will stand stud.

During his impressive racing career, Jimmy Freight amassed over $1.9 million in earnings and set a lifetime mark of 1:48 at age seven while capturing his second $100,000 Mohawk Gold Cup—having previously won it in 2019. Now nine years old, he holds the distinction of being the richest and co-fastest son of Sportswriter, out of the Western Ideal mare Allamerican Summer.

As a two- and three-year-old, Jimmy Freight was a standout in the Ontario Sires Stakes (OSS) Gold divisions, winning multiple titles. His victories include the $225,000 OSS Super Final and a division of the Somebeachsomewhere Stakes at age three. He went unbeaten in the OSS as a sophomore, earning the O’Brien Award as Canada’s Three-Year-Old Pacing Colt of the Year.

In his aged campaign, Jimmy Freight added several major wins to his resume, including the 2019 Dayton Pacing Derby and the 2022 Camluck Classic. Over his 85-race career, he recorded 37 wins, 18 seconds, and 14 thirds.

Jimmy Freight’s first crop of foals hit the track in 2023, with 15 starters out of 24 foals. Two of his offspring have already earned over $100,000, including Resilience p,3, 1:50.2s ($167,736), who secured an OSS Gold win and the $100,000 Jimmy Freight Stakes.

"We are so honoured that Adriano Sorella allowed us to acquire this incredibly talented stallion and enhance Alberta’s breeding industry," said a statement from Faith Valley Ranch, located in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. "We look forward to seeing the impact his foals will have in the province."
