As jockey José Ortiz captivates Saratoga fans with his high-level riding skills, one fundamental question lingers: What prompted him to uproot his family and a thriving business to spend most of the year in Kentucky?
The answer reveals much about Ortiz's priorities and the evolving landscape of horse racing.
“It’s challenging to move when you’re doing well in a place like New York,” Ortiz, 30, admitted. “But I was prepared to sacrifice some stability for the happiness of my family and my wife.”
Ortiz and his wife, Taylor, are parents to three children: Leilani, 7; Derek, 5; and Nikolai, 3. Taylor, a former jockey herself, has always supported her husband’s aspirations and believes in his ability to succeed.
Taylor highlighted that one major factor for their stay in New York was the purse money, but changes in that situation now make moving to Kentucky a sensible choice. Kentucky's purses have surged due to historical horse racing, influencing Ortiz's decision. The recent Churchill Downs spring meet saw record payouts of $58 million over nine weeks, averaging $1.4 million daily.
Both Ortiz and Taylor are aware of the jockey career's unpredictability and the need to seize peak earning chances. Five years ago, switching locations would have been unthinkable, but they recognise New York's declining appeal due to higher living costs and operational challenges.
Ortiz, a leading New York rider since 2016, credits agent Steve Rushing for his support during the transition. Despite uncertainties about his reception in Kentucky, Ortiz tied for the spring meet riding title with 45 wins. As of late July at Saratoga, he ranked fourth overall with 12 wins and is focused on winning the Kentucky Derby and aiming for the Hall of Fame.
Taylor appreciates the family's new life in Kentucky, valuing a farm upbringing for their children. She feels the family's priorities align well, stating it's great to balance career and family life. Ortiz sees this move as a fresh start, excited about growth in a new environment.
