Julie Harrington’s wish

Julie Harrington, the chief executive of the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), will be stepping down from her role at the end of 2024 after four years at the helm of British racing's governing body. While she had made this decision some time ago, she agreed to remain in her position until the end of the year to ensure a smooth transition to her successor.

Her departure comes shortly after the announcement of another senior figure in the sport, Jockey Club chief executive Nevin Truesdale, also leaving his role. Harrington stated that with significant developments in place to enhance and grow the industry, including strategies for sustainability and unity, she felt it was the right time to move on and let someone else lead the sport into its next phase.

During her tenure, Harrington had to navigate the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic on British racing, as well as address issues regarding the BHA's governance structure and the sport's lobbying efforts with the government on matters such as gambling regulations. Despite facing criticism over various issues, she expressed confidence in the industry's ability to continue progressing with unity and shared purpose.

Looking ahead, Harrington plans to pursue a non-executive career, and the BHA is already engaged in the search for her successor as chair, with Joe Saumarez Smith set to step down at the end of May 2025. Harrington expressed gratitude for her time with the BHA and acknowledged the dedicated efforts of the executive team and staff.

Saumarez Smith commended Harrington for her outstanding leadership and contributions to the industry, acknowledging her role in driving positive changes and navigating challenging environments. He expressed understanding and support for her decision to step down and wished her success in her future endeavours.
