June 1st is the day of the Paul Sapienza Elmont/Belmont Parade, the New York Racing Association announced.
The one-mile procession honouring the Elmont town and the Belmont Stakes, presented by NYRA Bets, will take place for the 16th time this year. Saratoga Springs will host the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival this year.
At ten in the morning, the procession will begin at the Covert Avenue School and head west on Hempstead Turnpike, ending at the Alva T. Stanforth Sports Complex, which is located at 700 Hempstead Turnpike, next to the Elmont Library.
This year's parade participants will assemble in the Covert Avenue School parking lot at 9:30 a.m.
The late Paul Sapienza, a lifelong citizen of Elmont and a past president of the Elmont Chamber of Commerce is honoured in the procession. Participants will be local leaders, law enforcement officers, youth organisations from the area, marching bands from Elmont public schools, and political officials.
The owners of Salvatore's of Elmont, Anna and Vito Cortesiano, have been selected as the parade's grand marshalls for this year.
Local student players from New Hyde Park Memorial High School, Sewanhaka High School, Floral Park Memorial High School, and Elmont Memorial High School will compete in an exhibition soccer tournament at the Alva T. Stanforth Sports Complex after the procession.
