Ken McPeek has decided not to hurry with Mystik Dan's next race

Trainer Ken McPeek has decided that Mystik Dan will not be competing in the Grade 1 Travers, casting doubts on whether the Kentucky Derby winner and Preakness runner-up will return to the track at all this season.

McPeek expressed concerns about the short ramp-up to the Travers and the toll that the previous races have taken on Mystic Dan. The horse has had a busy racing schedule, including three Kentucky Derby preps at Oaklawn and all three legs of the Triple Crown.

While McPeek believes that Mystik Dan will eventually return to racing as an older horse, he emphasises the importance of allowing the horse to rest and recover. There is no set timeline for his return, with McPeek stating that they will let the horse dictate when he is ready to race again.

The trainer also mentioned the possibility of star filly Thorpedo Anna taking on the boys in the Travers, depending on her performance in the Coaching Club American Oaks. McPeek sees potential in Thorpedo Anna to compete against male horses and believes she could be a contender for division honours.

Despite the excitement surrounding Thorpedo Anna, McPeek is cautious about pushing her too soon, emphasising the need for her to dominate against fillies before considering facing males. He views her as one of the best fillies he has trained, alongside Take Charge Lady and Swiss Skydiver.

Ultimately, McPeek's focus is on the well-being of his horses and ensuring that they are ready to compete at their best when the time comes.
