Machtu N Wins Auld Lang Syne Farewell by a Nose

At Cumberland Raceway, Machtu N, driven by McGwire Sowers, secured a dramatic victory in the $6,000 Auld Lang Syne farewell pace for 14-year-old harness racing pacers. The race concluded in a thrilling photo finish, with Machtu N narrowly edging out a fast-finishing Rockaholic, piloted by Andy Harrington.

Starting from post four, Machtu N claimed an early lead, clocking an opening panel of :29.4 after a brief duel with Rockaholic. Setting moderate fractions of 1:02 and 1:31.2, the veteran pacers entered the final stretch evenly matched. Despite a strong late surge from Rockaholic, Machtu N held on to win by a nose in 2:01.2. Owned and trained by Tammy Sowers, the winner paid $3.20.

The day celebrated the achievements of 14-year-old Standardbreds, featuring a parade and recognition for their storied careers. Lucan Hanover, a world champion and Little Brown Jug heat winner, led the proceedings. The retirees boasted combined earnings of $4.9 million and 561 career victories, averaging 47 wins per horse.

Sunday marks the final race day of Cumberland’s winter meet, featuring competitive races, including two $12,500 pop-up finals and a $7,500 guaranteed Pick 5 wager. Racing will resume at the historic Southern Maine oval in April 2025.
