McNair Steps Back Following Remarkable Season

Doug McNair, a celebrated harness racing driver, has decided to end 2024 on a high note, reminiscent of George Costanza's iconic strategy of leaving at the peak. However, his return to racing remains uncertain. Following a demanding weekend of races in France at Hippodrome Paris Vincennes on November 29 and at The Meadowlands in New Jersey the next day, many expected to see McNair back in action at Woodbine Mohawk Park. Yet, he has opted for a break this December and potentially longer.

McNair shared that he has been considering this hiatus for a while, noting his near-unbroken streak of Saturday night drives over 16 years. Reflecting on his commitment to the sport, he mentioned even adjusting his best man duties for a friend’s wedding to accommodate racing. While his passion for driving remains undiminished, McNair expressed hope that a break of one to three months could help him return stronger, both mentally and physically.

At 35, McNair concludes a stellar year, ranking third in wins (235) and purses ($5.6 million) at Woodbine Mohawk Park. His career-best $7.23 million in earnings this year contributes to a remarkable total of over $88 million in career purses and 4,729 victories.

During his break, McNair may shift focus, assisting his father Gregg by transporting horses to a Florida training facility and even indulging in some golf. For now, McNair is set to take time off until at least 2025.
