Murphy Identifies The Foxes as Top Contender in Riyadh

Rider set for Saudi Cup showcase with strong claims in Turf Cup.

Oisin Murphy is gearing up for the highly anticipated world's most lucrative racing event in Saudi Arabia this weekend, confident in his mounts for the prestigious Saudi Cup card at the King Abdulaziz Racecourse. The 28-year-old jockey, who has been crisscrossing the globe this winter, has secured three prime rides for Saturday's race day.

Murphy, who recently steered The Foxes to Dante glory under the tutelage of long-time trainer Andrew Balding, is eyeing a significant victory after narrowly missing out in the Belmont Derby last July. The talented four-year-old, owned by King Power Racing, prepared for his upcoming challenge in the Neom Turf Cup with a solid run on the Tapeta at Southwell. Notable contenders in the $2 million event include Aidan O'Brien's Luxembourg, the Hong Kong Cup runner-up.

Speaking about The Foxes, Murphy commented,

"I should have won a Grade One on him in America in the Belmont Derby. He got no run then, but fast ground and left-handed tracks suit him well. I believe, apart from Luxembourg, he should be right up there on ratings, and I am eagerly anticipating his performance".

Adding to his roster, Murphy will also be aboard Kieran Cotter's Matilda Picotte, a top-class Irish filly, who excelled over seven furlongs in the past. With the Turf Sprint distance just short of that mark, Murphy is optimistic about their chances. He expressed,

"Matilda Picotte showed a lot of promise last year. Her form in the autumn was exceptional, and I believe the distance is ideal for her. She possesses immense natural speed, and despite a different track style, she has gained valuable racing experience".

Matilda Picotte, drawing stall 14 for the event, is reported to be in excellent condition following the journey from County Laois to Riyadh. Cotter expressed his satisfaction, saying,

"She has settled in nicely and everyone is pleased with her condition. We are anticipating a strong showing on Saturday".

Away from his international ventures, Murphy has been in stellar form on the UK all-weather circuit, and he will also be riding Marco Botti's Yorkshire Cup winner Giavellotto in the Red Sea Turf Handicap. Reflecting on Giavellotto's chances, Murphy said,

"Giavellotto may carry a significant weight, but his impressive form aligns well with this race type. I recall Andrea Atzeni's winning performance on him at York, and a repeat of that display could place him in a competitive position".
