Upon the completion of his second three-year term, R. Glenn Sikura will be stepping down as Chief Steward of The Jockey Club of Canada. The Board of Stewards has appointed Doug Anderson to succeed Glenn as Chief Steward, effective June 29, 2024, during The Jockey Club of Canada’s Annual General Meeting at Woodbine Racetrack.
Doug Anderson has been a long-standing member of the thoroughbred industry in Canada. He has been involved as an owner of Sovereign Award winners A Bit o’ Gold and Millie Girl breeds a small band of mares in Ontario each year, and races under Braconcrest Inc., both solely and in partnership. Doug also serves on the board of the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (Ontario Division) and actively supports thoroughbred retirement, frequently visiting and riding his own retirees.
Glenn Sikura, inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2023, was named Chief Steward of The Jockey Club of Canada in 2018. The Jockey Club of Canada extends its gratitude to Glenn for his dedication, especially during the challenging COVID-19 pandemic years, and for leading the 50th-anniversary celebrations. Glenn will remain on the Board of Stewards of The Jockey Club of Canada until his term ends at the 2025 Annual General Meeting.
David Anderson and Sue Leslie have also completed their second three-year terms on the Board of Stewards and have stepped down. The Board has appointed Mark Krembil and Sherry McLean as their successors, effective June 29, 2024. Mark is deeply involved in breeding, ownership, and aftercare through Chiefswood Stables Limited, while Sherry manages the breeding, ownership, consignment, and stud farm Northern Dawn Stables Inc.
Following the appointment of the new Chief Steward, Stewards, and other meeting proceedings, members and guests enjoyed a question-and-answer session featuring NHL star turned racing analyst, Eddie Olczyk. Olczyk discussed his book, *Beating the Odds* (2019), which chronicles his hockey career and battle with cancer. He also shared his passion for horse racing and gambling, engaging the audience with his captivating stories.
