Michael Foster's gelding, Next, will run in the $200,000 Brooklyn Stakes (G2) on July 5, marking the first time in nearly two years that he will race a distance less than 1 1/2 miles. Trained by William "Doug" Cowans and ridden by regular jockey Luan Machado, Next aims to defend his title in the Brooklyn Stakes, which will be run at 1 3/8 miles due to Aqueduct Racetrack's smaller circumference while Belmont Park undergoes reconstruction.
Next has demonstrated exceptional stamina, winning six of his last seven starts, all at 1 1/2 miles or more on dirt, establishing himself as America's top marathon runner on dirt. His trainer, Doug Cowans, expressed confidence in Next's ability to handle the shorter distance, highlighting the horse's excellent condition and stamina.
Next's impressive record includes a four-race winning streak, starting with last year's Brooklyn Stakes and culminating in a dominant 11 1/4-length victory in the Isaac Murphy Marathon at Churchill Downs earlier this year. This victory came after a long layoff and a third-place finish in the same race the previous year.
Next's competition in the Brooklyn Stakes includes six rivals, notably Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable's Crupi, trained by Todd Pletcher. Crupi recently won the 1 1/4-mile Suburban Stakes (G2) at Saratoga Race Course, marking his first graded stakes victory. Other notable entries are Dai Vernon and Masqueparade, who finished second and third, respectively, in the Isaac Murphy Marathon two months ago.
Next's continued success and longevity in marathon races highlight his unique stamina and training, making him a standout in the Thoroughbred racing scene.
