A stallion share in the North American record-holder and Grade I Stakes winner (GISW) Cogburn (by Not This Time) will be available for purchase at the inaugural Keeneland Championship Sale. The sale will take place on the evening of Wednesday, October 30, at Del Mar, the venue for the 2024 Breeders' Cup World Championships scheduled for November 1-2, as announced by Keeneland on Wednesday.
The 5-year-old Cogburn, who has earned nearly $2.4 million across 15 starts, has been dominant in 2024, winning all three of his races. His victories include the GI Jaipur Stakes at Saratoga, where he set a North American record with a time of :59.80 for 5 1/2 furlongs on turf, the GII Ainsworth Turf Sprint Stakes at Kentucky Downs, and the GII Twin Spires Turf Sprint Stakes at Churchill Downs.
Trained by Steve Asmussen, Cogburn is aiming for the GI Prevagen Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint on November 2 at Del Mar. Following this race, he will retire to WinStar Farm in Versailles, Kentucky, for the 2025 breeding season.
Consigned by EliTE, the share being offered at the Championship Sale is an original share and does not require syndicate approval. The new shareholder will own 1/40th of all stallion income and related expenses starting with the 2025 breeding season.
"We're thrilled to stand the fastest horse in the world," said WinStar Farm President/CEO & Racing Manager Elliott Walden. "There has been significant interest in shares, but only a limited number are available. We felt the Keeneland Championship Sale at the Breeders' Cup was the perfect venue to offer this rare opportunity."
Tony Lacy, Keeneland's Vice President of Sales, added, "We are grateful to Clark Brewster, Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt, WinStar Farm, and Lindy Farm for making this share in Cogburn available. This is an exciting offering, particularly as it’s the only share available for trade before Cogburn’s retirement."
