Notable Speech made a strong comeback for trainer Charlie Appleby with a commanding win in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes, the premier race at the Goodwood Festival and a guaranteed qualifier for the Breeders' Cup Mile.
After a disappointing performance in the St James’s Palace Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot, Notable Speech returned to the form that saw him clinch the 2,000 Guineas (G1) at Newmarket.
The 11-10 favourite Henry Longfellow and the longshot Sonny Liston took the early lead, but Notable Speech, ridden by William Buick, kept a close watch from behind. As the field approached the cutaway, Notable Speech surged impressively towards the far rail and pulled away.
Maljoom finished as the runner-up, a length and a half behind, with Facteur Cheval from France taking third, a neck ahead of Henry Longfellow, who had previously bested Notable Speech by nearly six lengths at Royal Ascot.
