Who dominates 2-year-old sales?
This question might go several paths depending on one's notion of success.
The most apparent measure is sale prices, but only a few offerings and their sires will make news after selling for a lot. The same goes for sires whose youngsters display the fastest under-tack timings. Highlights are crucial, but winning an auction season requires examining the whole body of work.
Watch who qualified after the first auction of the season and how those stallions shook out.
#1 - Nyquist, Darley
The top sire from the previous year starts in 2024 with the lead.
After this month's OBS March selling, Nyquist was the only qualified stallion to finish in the top five by average breeze time and median selling price, offering us a taste of what a career-advancing stallion may perform in 2024.
Justin Casse, agent, bought the filly from Wavertree Stables for $750,000 to lead the Nyquists at the OBS March Sale. She also helped Nyquist rank third in median selling price at $225,000.
#2 - Twirling Candy, Lane's End
Twirling Candy 2-year-olds have always been popular, and his 2024 class has something to like.
Hip 499, a filly by Nest Egg, was sold to Jet Horse LLC for $600,000. Agent Eddie Woods consigned the filly.
That boosted Twirling Candy's median sale price to $230,000, second among qualified sires.
#3: Uncle Mo, Ashford Stud
It's no surprise that Uncle Mo is in the top three after receiving extensive coverage in this post.
His category-leading median selling price of $400,000 shows buyers realize this. He had four juveniles sold for $500,000 or more in the OBS March Sale, the most of any sire this renewal.
