Season Opener at Century Downs Showcases Ten Races

Harness racing makes its return to Calgary, Alta. for the 2024 meet, with ten races set to light up Century Downs on Saturday, March 16.

The matinee card, commencing at 12:45 p.m. (MT), is headlined by the $12,500 Fillies and Mares Preferred event in the seventh race.

The highlight of the featured division will be Miss Itunes, a seven-year-old Mystery Chase mare making her seasonal debut from the rail. With an impressive record of 23 victories and earnings close to a quarter of a million dollars, she pocketed $57,920 last year, boasting seven wins. Maintaining a strong performance, her last ten starts in the Preferred class have all secured a place in the money list. The mare, trained by David Lamont and owned by Donna Wyse, is set to be driven by Kelly Hoerdt.

Miss Itunes will face stiff competition from If Only Id Known, a six-year-old Shadow Play mare closing in on $200,000 in career earnings with 17 victories. With three starts this season resulting in a win, third, and fourth-place finish, this mare has consistently finished in the money in her last nine races. David Kelly is scheduled to drive for owners Chris Lancaster and Velda Olding.

Completing the field are Gold Onthehorizon in post two, Outlaw Allie Oops from post three, Jakarta in post four, and Goodbye Ceia Later starting from post five, with respective drivers Phil Giesbrecht, Brandon Campbell, Kelly Hoerdt, and Mike Hennessy.

The opening event at the Calgary, Alta. oval promises an exciting day with 948 Brewing Company Ltd. samples, kids' activities, St. Patrick's Day giveaways, Post Time Pete appearances, and live music at The Oaks post-races. The first 100 attendees will receive complimentary event programs.

Harness racing at Century Downs will be a weekly Saturday affair at 12:45 p.m. through the end of March, followed by Friday races at 2:15 p.m. and Saturdays at 12:45 p.m. through August. Note that there will be no races on Friday, June 14, with racing rescheduled for Sunday, June 16 at 12:45 p.m., and no races on Saturday, June 29, with racing taking place on Sunday, June 30 at 6:05 p.m. The 2024 meet spans from March 16 to August 31.
