World champion trotter Southwind Tyrion has retired from racing and will begin his stallion career in 2025 at Winbak Farm in New York. With lifetime earnings of $1,214,549 and a record as the fastest two-year-old colt trotter in harness racing history, he brings an impressive pedigree to his new role.
Trainer and co-owner Ake Svanstedt recalled being drawn to Tyrion as a yearling for his exceptional pedigree and conformation. Known for his early speed and great temperament, Tyrion achieved notable successes, including a world record at two in the International Stallion Stakes and major victories in events like the Breeders Crown and FanDuel Championship.
Joe Thomson, owner of Winbak Farm, emphasised the importance of Tyrion’s speed as a two-year-old, a trait highly valued in competitive harness racing. The stallion’s potential to cross well with mares from lines like Chapter Seven and Walner has generated excitement, with Winbak Farm planning to breed some of their best mares to him.
Tyrion will stand his first season for a fee of $6,000, supported by the enhancements to New York’s stakes program. With new rules allowing mares bred out of state to qualify their foals for the program, his offspring are expected to have excellent racing opportunities.
Expressing confidence in Tyrion’s ability to pass on his talent, Svanstedt and the Winbak Farm team look forward to seeing his impact on future generations. The farm is committed to providing top care for the stallion and his mares.
