Sitting fourth along the backstretch, driver Anthony MacDonald launched Spitfire Oversees in pursuit of the unchallenged leader, Windsong Patriot. Despite the arduous trip, Spitfire Oversees overtook Windsong Patriot at the top of the stretch and powered home to win in 1:55. Celebrity Bambino, benefiting from a pocket trip, finished second by a length, while Windsong Patriot held on for third.
Trained by Stacey Van Huizen, the four-year-old ridgling by International Moni out of Legal Lady now boasts career earnings nearing $345,000 for owner Thestable Spitfireovrsees.
The second race produced a stunning outcome when heavy favourite Bluebird Choir (1-9) broke stride, paving the way for longshot payouts. Among the beneficiaries was 142-1 RT Wonder Pone, who didn’t win but delivered jaw-dropping payoffs of $437 to place and $182.20 to show under driver Kyle Bolon.
