The TOBA recognised Joe and Debby McCloskey as the December Members of the Month, honouring their achievements in racing and breeding through their operation, Cuyathy LLC. Their prominent horse, Johannes, a grade 1 winner, has made headlines this year, achieving notable victories including a recent win at the City of Hope Mile Stakes (G2T). Leading up to the Breeders’ Cup weekend, Joe reflected on the anticipation surrounding Johannes’s race, expressing the thrill of finally reaching such a prestigious event.
Originally from Detroit, Joe had relocated to Southern California for work before retiring from his role in the meat-processing industry. The couple ventured into the Thoroughbred world by gradually learning the intricacies of racing. The turning point for the McCloskeys came in 2014 when they purchased a filly named Cuyathy at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale, a name inspired by a spiritual acronym representing Debby’s belief in divine guidance.
Cuyathy has since produced several winners, including Johannes, who carries special significance for Joe, as he was named after his late father’s middle name. The McCloskeys are committed to continuing Johannes’s training next year, prioritising the horse's welfare over financial gains. They aim to maintain autonomy regarding their racing decisions, illustrating their passion for the sport while fostering a close bond with their horses. The McCloskeys’ journey reflects a combination of hard work, belief, and the unexpected joys of Thoroughbred racing.
