The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame

The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame will unveil special exhibitions honouring Hall of Fame members Paul Mellon and Ruffian, opening on Thursday, July 11. Curator Jessica Cloer expressed excitement about sharing their significant legacies with the public. "Paul Mellon and Ruffian were both tremendously impactful," Cloer remarked.

Paul Mellon, a Hall of Fame Pillar of the Turf, was renowned for his success as a thoroughbred owner and breeder. His champion racehorses included Hall of Fame members Arts and Letters and Fort Marcy, as well as Kentucky Derby winner Sea Hero and international star Mill Reef. Beyond racing, Mellon was an avid art collector and philanthropist, donating thousands of artworks to esteemed institutions such as the National Gallery of Art and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. This exhibition features selections from the Museum’s collection and archive, showcasing Mellon's impact on both the racing and art worlds. Mellon was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2013 as part of the inaugural Pillars of the Turf class.

The current exhibit in the Museum's Link Gallery delves into the history of Harry M. Stevens Concessions. Harry M. Stevens revolutionised food concessions at sports venues, beginning with the introduction of an improved scorecard at a baseball game in 1887. His company later expanded to include food and drink services at 20 racetracks across the country, including Belmont Park and Churchill Downs. The exhibit explores Stevens' pioneering role in modern concessions, credited with innovations like soda straws and possibly the hot dog.

These exhibits offer a comprehensive look at the contributions and lasting influence of Paul Mellon and Harry M. Stevens in the realms of horse racing, art, and public service. The museum invites visitors to explore these displays and gain insight into the rich history and enduring legacies of these notable figures.
