The six-year-old gelding Shines in Mohawk Preferred

Whichwaytothebeach (Somebeachsomewhere) captured the $32,000 Preferred-2 at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Saturday (Jun. 29) in an 8-1 harness racing upset.

Sylvain Filion fired the gelding off the wings, securing the front position, and then allowed Saulsbrook Victor (Brett MacDonald) to take the lead nearing the quarter in :27.1. Whichwaytothebeach remained in the pocket through the middle fractions of :55.4 and 1:24, tipping out at the head of the lane to challenge the leader.

Saulsbrook Victor held his ground into mid-stretch, but Whichwaytothebeach muscled past, drawing clear by two-and-a-quarter lengths to secure a 1:50.1 victory. Saulsbrook Victor finished second, and Write Me A Rose (Jody Jamieson) closed strongly to take third.

Trained by Garry Merner for Gino Toscani, Whichwaytothebeach has now won 22 of 86 career races, amassing $877,053 in earnings. The six-year-old gelding won his previous start on Jun. 22 in a conditioned event and is now four-for-16 this season.

Watch Her Dewitt  secured her fifth straight victory later on the card, achieving six digits in career earnings with a 1:53.4 win. Driven by Trevor Henry, the four-year-old, who has won 12 times this year, was trained by Shayne Barrington, who co-owns her with Macks Stable of Stoney Creek.

Wickedpace (McWicked), driven by Doug McNair, scored in her second start with a time of 1:53.2 for trainer Paul Cameron, who co-owns her with Jayne Cameron and Arnolds Horse Shack.

Au Jus (Stay Hungry) set an initial mark of 1:55.4, rallying from sixth at the top of the lane to win her debut. Tony Beaton trains the $50,000 Harrisburg purchase for Casie Coleman, Dumain Haven Fram, Mac Nichol, and Kevin McKinlay.

Woodbine Mohawk Park is scheduled to resume racing on Monday, Jul. 1 at 7:10 p.m. EDT.
