Louis Albertrani, famous for training the champion sprinter Artax who won the 1999 Breeders' Cup Sprint, has passed away at the age of 67.
Albertrani's death, believed to be due to a heart attack, was announced by David Grening of the Daily Racing Form on Monday. He was the elder brother of Tom Albertrani, a retired Grade 1-winning trainer.
During his training career from 1992 to 2021, Louis Albertrani achieved a 1,654: 133-161-191 record with earnings totalling $5,202,365. His most successful horse was Artax, a millionaire and four-time graded-stakes winner, who claimed victory in notable races such as the Breeders' Cup Sprint, Vosburgh (G1), Carter (G1), and Forest Hills Handicap (G1) in 1999.
Among the other notable horses trained by Albertrani were Aristotle, who placed in Grade 2 races, as well as Honor the Fleet, Concealed City, and Trevelyan, who all secured wins in stakes races.
Following his retirement from training, Albertrani worked as a placing and patrol judge at Parx, where he also held a position in the racing office.
