Century Endeavor Stuns in Saratoga's Open Event

In a surprising turn of events at Saratoga Casino Hotel, Canadian-bred Century Endeavor, under the guidance of trainer Mark Beckwith, pulled off a major upset in the Open event on Saturday, March 9. The long shot, with odds of 31-1, seized victory, marking a triumphant evening for the stable.

Despite starting second to last in the eight-horse feature, Century Endeavor, a contender for Pacer of the Year at the Spa in 2023, showcased remarkable patience.

Driver Brett Beckwith, leading the charge, strategically navigated the race, staying nearly a dozen lengths behind the frontrunners as the event commenced. The pace was intense, with the first half of the race clocking in at :27 and :56 on a track affected by the weather.

Beckwith maintained composure and precision, steering Century Endeavor expertly. In a remarkable display of strength, the nine-year-old Shadow Play gelding accelerated in the final stretch, covering a blistering :28.4 quarter mile to clinch victory in 1:54.3, edging out the competition by a mere half-length. The unexpected winner paid out at $64.50, causing a stir among spectators.

Lanjo Lee, ridden by Leon Bailey, tactfully manoeuvred through the Open event, securing the second position, while Soul Assassin, piloted by Marc Campbell, claimed third place.

Owned by Howard Jacobs of West Orange, New Jersey, Century Endeavor's victory was a standout moment in an evening dominated by Brett Beckwith, who secured five wins, and his father's stable, which accumulated four triumphs. The duo's exceptional performance in the '24 season has propelled them to the top of the driver and trainer standings.
