$370,000 worth a colt

The recent Fasig-Tipton New York-Bred Yearling Sale in Saratoga Springs concluded on a high note, setting new benchmarks for the event with a record median sale price and the third-highest average in the sale's history. The auction was highlighted by a $370,000 colt from Quality Road, purchased by trainer Chad Brown on behalf of Seth Klarman's Klaravich Stable, just a few lots from the end of the session.

Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning, Jr. expressed satisfaction with the sale results, noting the active bidding and strong demand for quality horses. Over the two days of the auction, 182 yearlings sold for a total of $19,095,500, resulting in an average price of $104,920 and a median of $86,500. Although the gross was lower than last year's record due to a smaller catalogue, both the average and median prices saw an increase compared to 2023.

Reactions from buyers and sellers indicated a balanced market, with expectations met regarding prices. Advisor Eddie Rosen remarked that prices were fair for buyers and sellers alike. David Cannizzo shared his positive experiences, noting that the quality of horses being sold drew significant interest.

The sale followed a record-setting Saratoga Sale the previous week, where over $100 million worth of horses were sold, marking a milestone for the auction house and the industry.

The standout colt, hip 595 by Quality Road, was well-regarded, coming from the Winter Quarter Farm consignment and bred by Waterville Lake Stable. He comes from notable lineage, being a full brother to stakes-placed Derrynane. Chad Brown acknowledged the efforts of his team, especially Mike and Mary Ryan, in identifying this standout horse amid a busy sale.

Overall, Klaravich Stable secured three yearlings at the sale, highlighting a successful buying strategy with valuable acquisitions, including fillies by Yaupon. Brown described the sale experience positively, noting that there were opportunities for good buys amid some higher-priced offerings.
