$42,000 for two Yearlings
In the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association Northern California Yearling and Horses of Racing Age Sale, two colts each sold for $42,000, making them the top sellers of the event. The first was a California-bred colt by Smiling Tiger, bred by Old English Rancho and consigned by Harris Farms. This colt, listed as Hip 47, is out of the grade 2 winner Brooke's Halo, which has already produced eight winners, including the multiple black-type stakes winner Rock and Glory, the dam of Grade 3 winner Little Vic.
The second $42,000 colt, listed as Hip 5, was by Union Rags and is the first foal out of the stakes-winning Grazen mare September Secret. Bred and consigned by Checkmate Thoroughbreds, this colt was purchased by Michael Nentwig.
Nentwig also acquired another yearling, Hip 12, a $26,000 colt by Clubhouse Ride named Help Me Mr Wizard. This purchase made Nentwig the sale's leading buyer by total expenditure. The colt, consigned by Checkmate Thoroughbreds and bred by Dan Eplin, is out of the stakes-placed Attila's Storm daughter Stormy Day.
Overall, 81 yearlings were sold at the auction, generating $481,900, with an average price of $5,949 and a median of $3,700. In the non-yearling category, 13 horses were sold for a total of $58,600, averaging $4,508 with a median of $3,500.
