Anisette and Didia Are Ready For Rematch

Anisette and Didia, who last faced off in the 2023 Rodeo Drive Stakes (G2T), are set for an exciting rematch in the $250,000 John C. Mabee Stakes (G2T) on September 7 at Del Mar. In their previous encounter, Didia triumphed by 1 ¾ lengths, but both mares have since added impressive victories to their records and return to the turf stronger than ever.

Anisette, the reigning queen of the Southern California turf mares, has enjoyed a stellar season. After ending her sophomore year with a win in the American Oaks (G1T), she has gone undefeated in 2024, claiming the Gamely Stakes (G1T) and Yellow Ribbon Handicap (G2T). Trained by Leonard Powell for Eclipse Thoroughbreds Partners, Anisette will be seeking her fourth consecutive graded win in the 1 1/8-mile John C. Mabee. With Umberto Rispoli aboard, she brings an impeccable three-for-three record at Del Mar and is known for her powerful closing kick.

Her primary challenger, Didia, has also been in top form, boasting victories in the Pegasus World Cup Filly and Mare Turf Invitational Stakes (G2T) and the New York Stakes (G1T), where she defeated a strong field, including War Like Goddess, McKulick, and Fev Rover. Trained by Ignacio Correas IV and owned by Merriebelle Stables and Resolute Racing, Didia comes into the race after a fourth-place finish in the Diana Stakes (G1T) at Saratoga. She will have a new rider, Hector Berrios, and shares the co-high weight of 124 pounds with Anisette.

Anisette and Didia face familiar competition in this race. Fuente Ovejuna, who tied for second in the Yellow Ribbon, returns alongside Uncorked and Lucky Girl, both of whom will try to upset Anisette again. Newcomers to the field include Anisette’s stablemate Royal Charter and CJ Thoroughbreds’ Hang the Moon, second in the Osunitas Stakes at Del Mar.

This thrilling showdown between two turf powerhouses promises to be a highlight of the racing season.
